It means the creditor has given up on collecting the debt you owed, and written it off as uncollectable. Yes, it may have been turned over to a collection agency. Call whoever is now responsible for collecting [original creditor or collection agency], negotiate a deal--then get it IN WRITING from them--that if you agree to pay $$$ [which may be the balance], they will agree to report to the credit bureaus that [strike your best deal--%26#039;paid in full%26#039; is best]. You want at least the balance and past due amounts to show $0 when all done, though they may or may not agree to remove evidence that it WAS in collection, since it WAS.Get everything in writing, document your payment [check, money order, etc], keep copies of all paperwork, check how the item has been corrected with the 3 major credit repositories: TransUnion, Experian, Equifax. You want the account to show at least $0 balance/$0 past due---since%26#039;settled%26#039; or %26#039;partial payment accepted%26#039; are not good for improving your score. You will be re-scored after you apply for a credit extension and your credit is re-pulled. Do NOT close out old accounts. Keep credit inquiries to a minimum. Note that after 7 yrs, collections would fall off of your credit report anyhow.
If you have charge-offs on your credit report...what does that mean and how do i payoff things on my report?
Those are accounts where money was owed and not paid in a certain time period, usually bank accounts. To pay off those things contact the company you owe and ask them how you can settle your accounts.

i believe a charge-off is the company saying that you are not going to pay the debt.
