How long can a creditor report a past due account to your credit Report. I heard 7 years, is this co

The answers here are right for the most part. It is 7 years for bad debts and 10 years for bankruptcies (from the date of discharge).

It%26#039;s 7 years from the date of last activity, not the date first reported. If you have an open balance in %26quot;active collection%26quot; (which can mean nothing more than %26quot;they still hold it as an open account and expect you to pay it someday%26quot;), that can go on for a long time (until they write it off then + 7 years).

A lot of creditors (especially collection agencies) will no longer keep your file on hand more than a year or two after the account has been settled. If you pull your credit report and you have a negative item on there, AND the date of last report is greater than a year ago, I would dispute it and see if it falls off ;-)

PS: Section 605(a)(4) that Studly pointed out states %26quot;(4) Accounts placed for collection or charged to profit and loss which antedate the report by more than seven years. (note 2)%26quot;

Note 2 says: %26quot;The reporting periods have been lengthened for certain adverse information pertaining to U.S. Government insured or guaranteed student loans, or pertaining to national direct student loans.%26quot;

Generally speaking, negative entries on your credit report are supposed to be removed at the end of 7 years. If it doesn%26#039;t happen automatically, you can request a copy of your credit report free each year and then request negative/outdated information be removed.

Yep, 7 years. I know of a guy who does credit repair, and the neat thing about him, he loves to talk, so he%26#039;ll give you lots of advice without charging you for it. I guess there are ways of investigating and doing inquiries to get it taken off. I%26#039;ll leave you his website below. Best of luck!

They can report it for 7 years, starting from the date of default.

Those who tell you otherwise can%26#039;t read. Look at the Fair Credit Reporting Act 605(a)(4)
